Robotics in the Evolution of Complexity Science
نویسنده
چکیده
The evolving science of complex systems consists of many inter-related but incompletely synthesised observations and ideas accumulated over the last century. Some outstanding problems can be identified as major hurdles to be overcome. Trying to understand these ‘bottleneck problems’ in the context of human systems is particularly difficult for two major reasons: it is difficult for humans to study human systems from the inside; and it is often impossible to perform repeatable experiments on complex human systems. It is proposed that communities of robots are complex system, manifesting many of bottleneck problems in complexity science. Furthermore, it is possible to set up systematic and repeatable experiments with robot systems that would be impractical or impossible for human systems. Thus robot systems are simpler than human systems, and they form an intermediate class of complex systems which can, and probably should, be used to investigate some of the most fundamental problems in complex systems science. By providing new insights and answers the bottleneck problems, robotics can make major contributions to the science of complex systems.

3D Scene and Object Classification Based on Information Complexity of Depth Data
In this paper the problem of 3D scene and object classification from depth data is addressed. In contrast to high-dimensional feature-based representation, the depth data is described in a low dimensional space. In order to remedy the curse of dimensionality problem, the depth data is described by a sparse model over a learned dictionary. Exploiting the algorithmic information theory, a new def...
متن کاملEvolution of Information and Complexity in an Ever-Expanding Universe
Using the usual definitions of information and entropy in quantum gravity and statistical mechanics and the existing views about the relation between information and complexity, we examine the evolution of complexity in an ever expanding universe.
متن کاملNonlinear Stabilizing Controller for a Special Class of Single Link Flexible Joint Robots
Joint flexibility is a very important factor to consider in the controller design for robot manipulators if high performance is expected. Most of the research works on control of flexible-joint robots in literature have ignored the actuator dynamics to avoid complexity in controller design. The problem of designing nonlinear controller for a class of single-link flexible-joint robot manipulator...

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, as he is more commonly known, was a Jesuit priest who died in 1955, having worked for some twenty years as a paleontologist in China. While being a renowned scientist, who assisted in the finding of the Peking Man fossil, Teilhard’s main desire and scholastic efforts were to reshape modern Christian theology in the light of contemporary science, especially in his own...
متن کاملOverview of Incremental Approaches to Evolutionary Robotics
$EVWUDFW Evolutionary Computation (EC) as a general learning method can be applied to the design of robot controllers, programs, hardware or even physical architectures. Our focus is on those that aim on the design of adaptive behaviors for autonomous and possibly learning agents. Many successful experiments showed that controllers for task requiring simple behaviors could be evolved. The amoun...
